4th CHS kiosk opens with Cuban flare
Carlos and Victoria Munoz, owners of Mama Chef Cuban Café, are no strangers to Charleston International Airport.
Carlos has spent 18 years as a ramp agent for Southwest Airlines. His wife Victoria worked in the airport’s Hudson retail stores for 4 ½ years. The ebb and flow of passengers scurrying through the terminal and the roar of aircraft is as familiar to them as the Cuban food they are now serving on Concourse B.
On May 19, Mama Chef Cuban Café became the fourth kiosk to open at CHS under the airport’s new Specialty Leasing Program. Also known as the Kiosk/Cart Program, it is designed to create direct and affordable opportunities for small and niche businesses to work in a vibrant travel and hospitality environment.
Mama Chef will offer Cuban and other sandwiches, pastries, non-alcoholic Pina Coladas and Cuban coffee from its cart at the top of the Concourse B walkway.
The couple has been selling their Cuban fare to airport workers and have catered airline employee lunches for four years from their food truck and catering businesses.
“Not everyone knows us and we want everyone to have a taste of good food,” the couple said. “We started out giving out samples while getting our food truck open. We closed our food truck to move on to bigger and better things.”
Mama Chef Cuban Café joins airport kiosks Daddy’s Girls Bakery, LMM Dolls & Gifts and King Street Cookies. The kiosks, which are located on Concourses A and B, are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
