New transcontinental route enhances access to the Charleston area for West Coast visitors and expands travel options for Lowcountry residents
North Charleston, SC — United Airlines will launch new nonstop service between Charleston International Airport (CHS) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) on March 28, 2027, offering business and leisure travelers a convenient, direct connection between two sought-after destinations.
As a legacy carrier at Charleston International Airport, United has a longstanding presence in the Charleston market, connecting Lowcountry travelers to destinations throughout the country. The addition of nonstop service to San Francisco further reinforces the airline’s commitment to the region.
The new route underscores the strength and desirability of the Charleston market and the continued growth of CHS’s air service network, highlighting the importance of connecting the Lowcountry to major domestic and international markets. It will expand travel options for Charleston-area residents and businesses, providing a direct link to the Bay Area – a major center for technology, business, tourism and innovation – as well as connections to destinations across the West Coast, Asia and the Pacific via United’s San Francisco hub.
“We’re thrilled to expand our service in Charleston with new nonstop seasonal service to San Francisco next summer,” said Mark Weithofer, Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning at United. “This provides the community with convenient cross-country service to the West Coast and builds on United’s existing service between Charleston and our hubs in Chicago, Newark, Washington Dulles, Denver and Houston.”
“Nonstop service to San Francisco is an exciting addition for Charleston International Airport and the entire Lowcountry,” said Elliott Summey, President and CEO of Charleston International Airport. “As our region continues to grow, so does the demand for convenient access to major markets across the country and around the world. This new transcontinental route strengthens our connection to the West Coast, supports our business and tourism communities, and gives travelers more choices when flying from their hometown airport.”
“United’s new nonstop service to San Francisco is a strong vote of confidence in the Charleston region’s growing economy and its appeal as a world-class destination. It connects our businesses to one of the nation’s most dynamic markets while making it easier for discerning visitors from the Bay Area to experience everything our region has to offer,” said Helen Hill, Chair of the Charleston Regional Aviation Authority and President and CEO of Explore Charleston.
