Memorial Day shaping up to be big travel weekend

(North Charleston)— As the Memorial Day holiday approaches, airports across the nation are gearing up for an influx of travelers eager to reunite with loved ones, embark on vacations, and pay tribute to those who have served our country. With increased passenger traffic expected, Charleston International Airport is implementing strategies to ensure a smooth travel experience for all.

“There are things passengers can do to make sure they have a hassle-free travel experience and so they don’t miss their flight because of lines at the airport,” said Elliott Summey, Executive Director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority.

Arrive Early: Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and arrive at the airport at least two hours in advance of their scheduled departure time. With larger crowds anticipated, allocating extra time for parking, check-in, security screening, and boarding will help minimize stress. Take advantage of the CHS Check N’ Go free baggage check service and skip the ticketing line inside of the terminal. Baggage check-in can be done in our Daily Parking Garage and along the front curb of the terminal.

Stay Informed: Passengers are advised to stay informed about their flight status and any updates or changes to their itinerary. Utilizing airline mobile apps, signing up for flight alerts, and regularly checking airport websites and social media channels can provide real-time information and peace of mind.

Flexible Travel: Options In response to increased demand, airlines are offering flexible booking options, including waived change fees and extended rebooking windows, to accommodate any last-minute adjustments to travel plans. Travelers are encouraged to take advantage of these offerings to ensure flexibility in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

“Charleston has grown and, along with it, the airport has grown to meet the travel needs of our passengers,” Summey said. “Don’t take the chance of missing your flight by arriving 30 minutes before takeoff. Get here early, get through security so you can relax at your gate and get something to eat or drink without rushing so you have a great travel experience.”

As we embark on this holiday weekend, let us not forget the true meaning of Memorial Day - a time to honor and remember the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Charleston International Airport joins the nation in paying tribute to our fallen heroes and expresses gratitude to all who have served.
