You asked for more space in the cell phone waiting lot. We listened. Today a new cell phone waiting lot opened with twice the number of parking spaces for Charleston International Airport customers.
The cell phone waiting area was created in 2009 to give customers an easy, convenient and free way to pick up passengers from the airport. The convenience of a nearby short-term parking area also alleviates traffic congestion in front of the terminal.
“We know customers want the convenience of the cell phone waiting lot because we watch it overflow during peak travel periods,” said Hernan E. Peña Jr., deputy director of the Charleston County Aviation Authority. “This additional parking will ease the crunch experienced during those times.”
The cell phone waiting lot grew from 40 to 80 parking spaces and includes new lighting and parking for handicap drivers. Along with the expansion of the remote/seasonal parking lot, the first phase of the airport parking transformation is under way and on track to be ready for the upcoming holiday rush.
The airport also is on track to begin construction in early 2019 on a new, five-story parking structure that will increase airport parking deck capacity by 3,000 spaces. The existing parking deck was built in 2005 and houses 1,268 parking spaces.
