About the Charleston International Airport Police Department
The Charleston International Airport Police Department was established in 1990. The department has general law enforcement authority and responsibility within Charleston County. All sworn personnel are South Carolina State Certified Class 1 Law Enforcement Officers, empowered to enforce South Carolina laws and the ordinances of the Charleston Regional Aviation Authority within the geographical boundaries of the airport district, principally Charleston International Airport (CHS), Charleston Executive Airport (JZI) on Johns Island, Mount Pleasant Regional Airport (LRO), and Berkeley County Airport (MKS).
The department provides complete and continuous law enforcement and security services to customers and the community. In addition, the department works closely with the Transportation Security Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, and all other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in support of our mission and goal of protecting and serving the community and customers that use our airports, providing a safe and secure environment, and keeping customer service as a top priority. Tarmac Delays
Charleston International Airport has formulated an Emergency Contingency Plan in accordance with §42301 of the 2012 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Modernization and Reform Act. The document below outlines the procedures Charleston International Airport will implement in the event of prolonged tarmac delays to:
- Facilitate the deplanement of passengers;
- Facilitate the sharing of facilities and ensure gate availability at the airport;
- Establish a sterile area post-excessive tarmac delays for passengers pending clearance by United States Customs & Border Protection (CBP).
