Charleston International Airport Airfield Reopens Following Recent Snowstorm


North Charleston, SC – Charleston International Airport (CHS) is pleased to announce that its airfield has reopened following the recent snowstorm that impacted the region. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our dedicated staff, contractors, and partners, the runways and air traffic control tower are fully operational, and flights have resumed.

Airport CEO Elliott Summey expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the recovery efforts. “Reopening the airfield after a significant weather event requires an extraordinary level of teamwork and commitment. We want to thank everyone who worked around the clock to restore safe operations. The safety of our travelers, crew, and staff will always be our number one priority,” said Summey.

Travelers are advised to contact their airlines directly for the latest updates on flight schedules and potential delays as operations return to normal.

The airfield at Charleston International Airport is currently undergoing inspections by the Joint Base Charleston Operations team. The Charleston International Airport team has cleared the airfield, and the inspections are proceeding smoothly.

If the inspections continue to meet approval, it is anticipated that the runways and the air traffic control tower could reopen as early as 1 p.m. today. However, the final decision to reopen the airfield rests with Joint Base Charleston base operations.

Travelers planning to fly today are urged to check with their airlines for the most up-to-date flight schedule information before arriving at the airport.

 Charleston International Airport (CHS) is closely monitoring the aftermath of the snowstorm and its impact on airport operations. The Joint Base Charleston base operations team is scheduled to conduct a comprehensive airfield inspection on Thursday morning to assess whether it is safe to reopen and resume flight operations.
