Charleston International Airport to Implement New Traffic Patterns Starting August 26th

(North Charleston)—Charleston International Airport (CHS) announces significant changes to its traffic patterns beginning the evening of Monday, August 26th, as part of its Parking Garage 3 (PG3) project. Whiting-Turner, the contractor for this project, will oversee the modifications to enhance traffic flow and improve overall airport operations.

Key Details:

Start Date: The work is scheduled to commence on the evening of Monday, August 26th, and will take place over three nights.

  • Day 1 (August 26th): The west entry of the traffic circle will be closed. Drivers will need to make a U-turn or turn right onto Dreamliner at the intersection of International and Porsche Boulevard to access the terminal. (See Figure 1 for detailed layout.)
  • Ongoing Work: Over the following nights, concrete jersey barriers will be installed along the loop road (indicated in blue on Figure 1). Additionally, construction will begin on a temporary road leading to the daily deck ticketing booth.
  • Day 3 (August 28th): On Wednesday night, Whiting-Turner will block off the remaining sections of the traffic circle. This will necessitate reversing the passenger and rental car traffic patterns as shown in Figure 2.

Airport officials advise travelers to plan for extra travel time and to follow posted detours and signage during the construction period.

We will provide updates on the progress and any potential changes to the schedule as the project moves forward.
