May the busiest month this year for fliers

May was a busy month for air travel at Charleston International Airport. In fact, it was the busiest month so far in 2018.

People flying in an out of CHS broke another record last month, increasing 13.6 percent to 435,093 people. Last May we served 383,019 customers.

“The summer travel season kicked off in May in a big way,” said Paul G. Campbell, Jr., executive director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority. “We’re thankful for continued growth at the airport. It allows us to provide great destinations and exceptional service to our customers, and it is vital to our support of and role in the economic prosperity of the Lowcountry region and the state.”

So far this year, 1.7 million people have into and out of Charleston International. New air service in 2018 has helped fuel the airport’s growth.

Earlier this year Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Airlines began operations at CHS. Since then, Frontier has added cities to its initial offerings.

Frontier now flies nonstop to Austin (AUS), Chicago (ORD), Denver (DEN), Philadelphia (PHL) and Trenton (TTN). On Aug. 15 its nonstop flights to Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) begin. Allegiant flies nonstop to Pittsburgh (PIT), Cincinnati (CVG), and Indianapolis (IND).

Along with additional routes and destinations from Delta, American, United, Southwest, JetBlue and Alaska, eight airlines now offer nonstop service from Charleston to 30 airports in 25 cities in the U.S.
